Titus Welliver has revealed Matt Damon's kindness during his late wife's illness.

The Bosch and Sons of Anarchy actor co-starred with Damon in 2012's Promised Land, while his wife, producer Elizabeth W. Alexander, was being treated for breast cancer and Welliver revealed Matt was extremely supportive during that time.

Speaking on Still Here Hollywood with Steve Kmetko, he explained: "I did a film with Matt and Matt is very, very bright kind, deeply, deeply kind, generous man.

"I read the script and, like all scripts, I handed it off to her.

"And [director] Gus Van Sant was someone I had always wanted to work with. I mean, I think he's a master filmmaker."

While Alexander agreed it was a "fantastic script," the filming dates were "in direct conflict with when we were going to go to Switzerland." [for alternative treatment for his wife].

However, Alexander told Welliver "this is an important film" and arranged for her mother to accompany her to Switzerland.

He said: "I did not want to do it. But it was at her insistence that I went and did it.

"Some way or another, through someone, Matt knew about what was going on. And he came to me and he just said, 'I want you to know that I got you. We got you. Everybody here has got you and it's going to be okay.'

"It's very hard to not be emotional" [about Damon's] "grace, generosity [and] kindness."

Speaking about Damon, Van Sant and the cast including John Krasinski, Frances McDormand and Scoot McNairy, he said: "I was surrounded by people that were loving but didn't treat me like I was made of rice paper.

"It was a marvellous time and it kind of kept me out of the water, somewhat buoyant."

Alexander died in October 2012 at the age of 52.

He said: "She came back and was doing well, and then she wasn't. She was 52-years-old and the love of my life.

"What a gift in a way she gave me. It was such an incredible experience to work with Matt and Gus."
