MIAMI — The Miami Dolphins have traded away quarterback Quinn Ewers to the Jacksonville Jaguars.

First reported by NFL insiders Ian Rapoport and Mike Garofolo, the Jaguars sent a 2028 sixth-round pick to the Dolphins in exchange for the second-year quarterback. He’s expected to immediately slide into the QB2 role behind Trevor Lawrence.

The Dolphins initially drafted Ewers in the seventh round of the 2025 NFL draft.

Ewers began the 2025 season as the backup quarterback for Tua Tagovailoa, who would find himself benched after Week 15 due to his steady decline in play.

The former Texas standout would start the final three games of the season, going 1-2 over that span that saw him complete roughly 67% of his passes for 567 yards. He would also throw a trio of both touchdowns and interceptions.

Then came a massive overhaul within the franchise. That meant a new coach in Jeff Hafley. A new general manager in Jon-Eric Sulllivan. And an influx of new talent including fellow quarterback Malik Willis.

Despite showing promise as a rookie, Ewers never failed to take the next step to secure the backup quarterback role throughout training camp and eventually injured his groin in the opening preseason game against the Washington Commanders.

Ewers never truly recovered from the groin injury. He sat out the final two preseason games and barely practiced, something that the new regime’s evaluation of the young quarterback rather difficult, especially considering his 1 for 8 performance against the Washington Commanders.

“I definitely wasn’t comfortable releasing the ball,” Ewers continued, explaining that it was the right side of his groin— or his “push-off leg” — that ailed him. He refused to use his injury as an excuse for his lackluster play in practice. “I wouldn’t say I’m 100%, but it’s part of ball. I’m just trying to work through it.”

In the week leading up to Friday’s preseason finale vs. the Atlanta Falcons, Hafley even noted that the backup quarterback role was still a competition.

“I think so,” Hafley said Tuesday morning when broached with the question. “Quinn really hasn’t been able to go very much. He was out there [yesterday]. Cam [Miller] obviously played a lot last week, and we’re hopeful that those guys will be able to go again on Friday.”

Hafley provided more context following Friday’s 17-12 loss to the Falcons.

“Quinn, we tried to get back into practice this week,” Hafley said, “but never truly felt comfortable enough to move around to be able to go out and play in a live setting.”

With Ewers now in Jacksonville, the backup role will likely fall to Miller. That title, however, will likely only be temporary as the former North Dakota State standout only completed just 48% of his passes for 131 yards and zero touchdowns across three preseason games.

Odds are the Dolphins will scour the market in the days following Sunday’s 53-man roster deadline in search of a new backup quarterback.
