What to stream: 'Love of Your Life' and other new releases to curl up with at home
Published in Entertainment News
It’s big week for movies in theaters, as awards season meets spooky season. But there are still some gems to curl up with at home that you won’t want to miss out on, so check out a few new releases this week that can please a variety of movie lovers in your household.
First up, “Love of Your Life,” starring Margaret Qualley, in a romantic drama directed by Rachel Morrison and written by Julia Cox. Morrison is an Oscar nominated cinematographer, who was the first woman to be nominated for an Academy Award in this category (for Dee Rees’ “Mudbound”). She is also known for working with Ryan Coogler, having shot “Black Panther,” and in 2024, she made her directorial debut with the boxing drama “The Fire Inside.” “Love of Your Life” premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in September before debuting on Prime Video this week.
“Love of Your Life” features Qualley as a young woman who sets off on an international journey in an attempt to heal from a devastating loss. Aaron Pierre, Gabriel Basso, Patrick Schwarzenegger and Catherine Keener co-star in this transporting and emotional drama. It’s the kind of big, sweeping love story that they don’t make anymore, but with a distinctly modern sensibility. Settle in with some tissues, and queue up “Love of Your Life” on Prime Video, streaming Oct. 14.
Also new on Apple TV is the adventure biopic “Tenzing,” about the Tibetan mountaineer Tenzing Norgay, who was the first man to summit Mount Everest in 1953, alongside Kiwi climber Edmund Hillary, as members of the British climbing team. Directed by Jennifer Peedom and written by Luke Davies and Peedom, adapting the book “Tenzing: Hero of Everest” by Ed Douglas, what sets this biopic apart is whom it focuses on — a former mountain sherpa who ascended to the heights of a great climber and achieved what most were not able to do.
Genden Phuntsok stars as Norgay, with Tom Hiddleston as Hillary, and Willem Dafoe as climbing team leader John Hunt. The film chronicles their summit of Everest while flashing back to Tenzing’s life growing up as a shepherd, achieving his dream of becoming a sherpa, despite his ethnic difference, and eventually a full-fledged climbing team member. It’s an inspiring and beautiful tale that showcases a different perspective on Everest. Stream it on Apple TV starting Friday, Oct. 16.
Finally, a film that was in theaters in August hits VOD this week. Filmmaker Joe Swanberg returns with a romantic dramedy, “The Sun Never Sets,” starring his frequent collaborator Jake Johnson and Dakota Fanning in an Alaska-set film about a messy love triangle. Older divorced dad Jack (Johnson) suggests taking a break with his younger girlfriend Wendy (Fanning) to see if there’s someone better suited to her life goals of marriage and kids. When she connects with an ex-boyfriend (Cory Michael Smith), jealousy ensues. It’s a surprisingly refreshing and very honest film about the kinds of self-sabotaging that can happen in relationships, but every note is pitch-perfect and played excellently by Swanberg’s troupe. Rent it on all digital platforms now.
